Skateboard portraits

April 13, 2020

At first I found it hard getting the creative juices flowing during the first few weeks of quarantine. But now that I’m able to enjoy some days of Easter holidays, I have finally found the time to start a project that’s been on my ‘to draw list’ for ages… decorating skateboards.

It was the death of Bill Withers that has got me started. I used my Posca markers but I only had a white and black one available, so I’m not quite satisfied with the white-looking version of Bill. The day after I drew E, using the skateboard background as skintone. A few days later I decided to draw Amy Winehouse (someone pointed out to me that I always draw men and I don’t know why but I guess there is some truth to it, so I had to prove him wrong :-). In the meantime some extra Posca markers have arrived but skintonewise I had to make do with a white one and one light orange, but I discovered that you can also add water and work with a pencil on the Posca ‘paint’.

Here’s my favourite Amy song (that I partially wrote on the skateboard)

I hope everyone is safe and sane out there and I truly hope everyone has got someone to lean on.

drawing writers

I bought myself an iPad last summer. I started experimenting with colouring some sketches I did on two lovely American writers: John Steinbeck and Edgar Allan Poe. Here’s the result:

More sailor’s delight

May 29, 2019

I don’t know where the sailors keep coming from, but here they are… I’m a big fan of Stephan Vanfleteren. When I see his pictures, I always end up drawing them. (I’m not sure if that’s allowed, but you could call it fan art, right?) There’s something imperfect, yet captivating about the faces he catches on film. Here’s my take on his sailor. I made a quick sketch in my sketchbook and then he ended up on my computer one evening. He turned out different than the version of my favourite photographer, yet I still quite like him. Oh captain, my captain!

faceEvery once in a while I feel the urge to pull silly faces. As does this guy.

my new hobby: tellydoodling

April 10, 2012

Being a natural-born multitasker, I’m used to doing lots of things whilst watching the television. Eating, Wordfeuding, telephoning, reading e-mails and exercising are amongst my favourite combos. (By the way, the programmes that are on lately, only require half a brain most of the time, so lately I rarely just watch television.) But yesterday I discovered a new, entertaining tellywatching combination which requires you to focus even harder on what you are seeing: tellydoodling.
